“Milonga” refers to a distinct style of Tango. Although Milonga uses the same basic elements as Tango, it tends to be faster-paced and less complex, placing greater emphasis on the underlying beat of the music. Dancers keep their bodies relaxed, as they skim across the floor in this playful version of Tango. Milonga Tango music is distinguished by its faster-paced beat, requiring dancers to take quicker steps.
“Milonga" also describes a social event or location for Tango dancing; or, to put it simply, a Tango dance party!
There are two distinct styles of Milonga: Milonga Lisa and Milonga Traspie. In Milonga Lisa (or Simple Milonga), dancers step on each beat of the music. In Milonga Traspie, dancers transfer their weight from one foot to another in double time to the music.
