Remember when you first learnt how to drive a manual car? At first it probably took you a while to get the car moving off smoothly but after a while you learnt how to ease it into gear by letting out the clutch gradually.
The beginning of a partner dance poses a similar problem. Some leaders tend not to give their partner any clues that they would like to take a step, and as result their partner feels a sudden jerk. Dancers call this "popping the clutch".
To prevent bunny hop starts, focus on becoming familiar with the principle of connecting as you begin to step. Making a strong connection with your partner prevents you from "popping the clutch" and getting off to a rough start. The type of framing connection used with your partner will depend on the dance style, but basically either an A frame or a V frame will be used. If you are not sure please ask your instructor to show you when you are next in class.
Leaders, by preceding all movement with an “intention of movement”, you decrease the potential for a panicked response from your partner and will build your confidence in your ability to lead. Followers, by tapping into the leaders’ connection (leaning into the frame), you will be able to correctly feel the direction he wishes to go. The preparation that is felt will connect you both to take the first step smoothly as one!
